Do Animals Have Rights Too?

The concept of human rights is such a controversial topic because of issues that involve abuse. From centuries ago until now, human rights are constantly violated and brought up in the mainstream media. However, there is something rarely spoken of but just as crucial as well – animal rights.

Do animals have rights? It is but a valid question like human rights. Even though we think of animals as less superior than us, they are living beings too that deserve to treated right by society. But doesn’t evolution teach us that we evolved from Primates? If that’s the case, we are animals too, in a sense, right?

Abusing animals is no more justifiable than abusing people, writes Peter Tatchell. The moral touchstone is sentience, not species, and the ‘humans first’ ideology of speciesism is analogous to homophobia, racism & misogyny. Cruelty is barbarism, whether inflicted on humans or on other species. We need to recognise and accept our common animal nature.

Since we humans are an animal species, it is obvious that human rights are a form of animal rights; and that animal rights include – or should include – the human species.

Sadly, not everyone sees it this way. Many view humans and other animals as totally distinct: drawing a clear, sharp line between animal rights and human rights.

That’s not my view. Sentience is the bond that unites all animal species,

The Struggle Of Live Streaming

Most of us can relate to the fact that the struggle is real when we live stream. While most Western countries enjoy faster and cheaper Internet access, many developing nations struggle with poor Internet connections at double or thrice the price that their Western counterparts pay for. It’s something that really won’t bother you if you just use the web to browse and access social media and not for video watching, or worse, for work. Poor connections can still do its job of loading pages and help you stay updated on what’s viral and trending online. However, Internet connectivity is a major headache for people who love to stream online or even use the web to earn money. And rebuffering is a common complaint experienced by most web users who loves watching their favorite videos via the World Wide Web.

Back in the days, you only had the television and the occasional video rentals of favorite movies to keep you entertained during your free time. But that was eons ago. Blockbuster has long since been bankrupt and most kids these days have no idea what a VHS is and how it works. For them, watching videos can easily be done on Youtube or any video sharing site on the web. Even young kids have subscriptions to their fave Youtube channels to help them pass the time. At least, they no longer have to …

Fighting The Stigma Of Mental Illness

In most societies, talking about mental illness is a major taboo. People are not just comfortable discussing any of these controversial health conditions most of us know so little about. But what is really so distressing when discussing issues that are innate to all humans? If we get sick physiologically because of many factors, the same thing can happen to our mental state. After all, we are not robots and we have feelings that get hurt too.

Our psychological, emotional and social well-being comprises our mental health. How we feel, think, act and respond to stress are affected by all these factors. Whether you are a young child or an older adult, it is important to take care of your mental health at every stage of your life because various external factors like biological agents, life experiences, and a family history of a mental disease can put you at higher risk of developing a mental illness over time. A healthy mental state can help you cope with all the challenges you face in life, whether big or small, and the failure to cope often leads to mental illness.

Nicola talks openly about her battle with schizophrenia in a bid to help other people understand the illness better. A few years ago she became an ambassador for See Change, the National Mental Health Stigma Reduction Partnership, and will be speaking about the condition when

How Will Local Businesses Fare During The Trump Admin?

Nothing is constant in this world. And America just recently witnessed one of the most surprising events took place in the country’s political arena. President Trump won the American presidency and snatched Hillary Clinton’s dream of becoming the first U.S. lady president. It made the news all over the globe and people were wondering what his leadership would mean to the U.S. and to the world at large.

Now that he has finally assumed office, both local and big businesses are curious as to what will happen next to their businesses as his plan for the next four years continues to unfold (and businessmen most likely cringe in anticipation).

It’s still early in the Trump presidency, but not too early for supply chain professionals to begin planning for what could be major challenges in global markets and trade agreements, especially if President Donald Trump follows through on border tariffs, the dismantling of existing trade agreements, and other “America First” protectionism ideas he has shared as part of his Twitter-storm rhetoric.

One discussion topic among procurement and supply chain professionals is the resurrection of the age-old “near-shore/on-shore” debate, and whether (and when and where) supply chain professionals should either locate their own assets or build relationships with suppliers.

An early viewpoint from the January meeting of political and business movers and shakers in Davos is that thinking too globally might not be the wisest

Staying Fit And Healthy In The Era of Social Media

People were more active back then. The absence of too much technology prompted people to do things on their own when they can’t rely on a gadget or two to wash their dishes, heat their food or research their homework. Everything was done by scratch. And people led more active lives too. People actually go out of the house to keep themselves entertained since nothing much is on TV and they didn’t have a smartphone to fiddle with.

Nowadays, people can’t get enough of social media. It borders on an addiction/ obsession already. And as we become more dependent and obsessed with technology, the less time we have to move around and take care of our physical health. Even sleep is compromised as you stay up late at night to keep yourself updated on the happenings on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. As a result, our physical health deteriorates and obesity is becoming a global issue. People these days have no time to engage in actual sports but they play all sorts of games on their smartphones, tablets, and computers.

You just won a big game with your team and one way to commemorate the victory is by posting a video of the celebration on your Instagram or Snapchat. Should you post?

You just lost a big game with your team and one way of venting is to post your frustrations on Facebook or

Goodbye Mac, Hello Windows

If you are one of the handful of Mac users who suddenly find your classy and flashy device is no longer working for you, it is probably time to make the switch to a Windows PC. One may feel overwhelmed, though, with the wide array of Windows PCs to choose from. With different brands and features, how will you know which one to choose?

Many Mac users share the same sentiment as you. Fewer updates, old features, software and hard drive issues are enough to drive you insane, now don’t get me started on price because that’s the cherry on top. All these issues will make you wonder whether using a Macbook Pro is still worth your time and money after all and drive you to swap it with a Windows PC instead.

So you’ve run out of patience with your old MacBook Pro, and have now been tempted over to the world of Windows by all the shiny 2-in-1 devices recently announced (or maybe you just prefer Cortana to Siri). How exactly do you get started? And can you really move all of your important files over easily? Here’s everything you need to know about switching from Mac to Windows.

The first point to make is that Windows and macOS are still pretty different operating systems, and you may well hit a few bumps in the road as you make the switch.

Does The Future Lie With Artificial Intelligence?

Robots. You may have only seen them in the movies or on TV. It’s not as if you can just buy one from the mall and ask it to do your household chores for you, right? It only happens in the movie. While we are surrounded by technology, we still haven’t reached that level yet. That’s way up high in the niches of science and technology. What we have for now are smartphones and Amazon’s Alexa, perhaps? However, they don’t look like the AI we have in mind, a humanoid robot.

But considering that the experts are now refining the technology of quantum computing in their secret labs, we know for sure that the future lies with very advanced technology such as artificial intelligence. Imagine having a robot that talks and thinks for itself. Such a thought is both exciting and scary at the same time. Well, I won’t complain if I end up with Baymax – that is if he is even part of the option. But with the future dominated by AI, the least we can do is to prepare for it, right?

Sage is targeting 16-25 year olds, including school leavers and millennials, with a new initiative looking to teach skills in artificial intelligence (AI) and bots.

The Sage Foundation plans to set up what it is calling a ‘BotCamp’, a programme that will facilitate the training of over

Is The U.S. Economy In Turmoil Again

Nothing had been constant in the economy for years. It fluctuates from time to time in response to various factors. The U.S. economy is doing much better now after the most recent recession and business is starting to pick up. As a result, the unemployment rate has reduced and the people have more spending power.

However, you can also see many shops closing down because fewer people frequents the mall anymore when they can do their shopping online. Such an irony, right? Employees will still lose their jobs and crime rates may again increase – as if law and order are not already a major headache right now.

So, we can’t say yet that the economy is in great shape again. Moreover, the controversial policies of President Trump are sure to affect the U.S. economy in a major way.

The budget, the Liberal government’s second since the 2015 election, will land as Ottawa and corporate Canada scramble to assess the risks of possible and unpredictable policy actions from the country’s top trading partner.

There are fears of negative economic fallout for Canada from the decisions of the Trump administration and it’s unclear whether Morneau’s budget will account for the unknowns.

Trump calling cards like a border tax, protectionist policies, corporate and personal tax cuts and a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement all pose an economic danger north of the border.

Trouble In The Arts

We do not always understand one another because the world is such a diverse place. We live in different geographical locations and speak different languages too. But if there is one language spoken by all regardless of race, culture, education, and status in life, it is obviously the arts. None of these factors matter in your appreciation for the arts.

We were all born with artistic sensibilities. The art gives us a sense of calm and balance – away from the chaos of modern living and the fast pace of modern life. But not everyone knows how to appreciate its value. Since not technically considered a human necessity, the art sector will cease to enjoy big funding from the U.S. government.

New York City sees itself as the cultural capital of the nation — if not the world — but its artistic community is suddenly vulnerable to budget cuts in Washington, where the administration of President Trump is considering eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts, which provides millions of dollars each year to groups in the city.

The future is not so bright for those in the arts and everyone else who will be affected by the budget cut. We feel for struggling artists who wants to make a name in this world and give back to the world through the art pieces they make.

Environmental Issues That Matter Today

We take for granted many of the things around us. Try to look back a century ago and compare the quality of our lives. You buy water now. You even buy air through the air conditioning units you install at home. Many of the things that were free before are now for sale. What does that mean?

It can mean two ways – either that entrepreneurs found a way to make a sale and enjoy bigger profits or that our environment is deteriorating. Well, the reason is likely both. You need a good product or service to make a name and a living in this world. And if you can make people buy something that used to be for free, then you hit the jackpot.

But if you also survey your surroundings, you’ll see that it is far from pristine and we contributed to its deterioration. Can you safely drink water from streams and rivers today? Probably not. It is no longer safe for human consumption that even fishes can be rarely seen or fished. But it is not yet too late to save the environment if we all unite and act now.

Five dozen demonstrators marched through the streets of downtown Oakland on Tuesday afternoon at a “Resist Trump” rally focused on protecting the environment.

Marchers, carrying banners that said “One Planet, One People, No Pipeline,” started at 12th and Broadway and

Medical Professionals Are Not Happy With GOP Health Proposal

We can’t deny that major changes are taking place in the country today. With the change in the political climate, we can expect that more changes are still coming our way in the months and years to come. It has been evident ever since the new president took oath and assumed the presidency.

The passage of new bills concerning health care is just as controversial as Trump’s immigration and trade policies. Obamacare has been in place for the last two terms. Various medical personnel all over the country are not thrilled with the current administration’s efforts at repealing it and eventually getting it replaced. Bloomberg.com got it covered:

The Republican plan to replace Obamacare has a health problem.

On Wednesday, the U.S.’s biggest advocacy group for doctors came out against House Republicans’ legislation, while the insurance lobby expressed concerns with the bill, adding to growing opposition from the country’s top trade groups for physicians and hospitals who worry that it will leave more people uninsured or with limited coverage.

In a letter to Congress, the American Medical Association said it “cannot support the AHCA as it is currently written,” referring to the American Health Care Act, as the Republican proposal to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act is named. The association calls itself the largest physician advocacy group in the country, and backed the nomination of Tom Price as President Donald

Snoring Indicates More Serious Health Problems

We all just want to sleep after a long day at work or at school. You can’t wait but to hit the sack and get some well-deserved snooze and recharge for the next day. But getting a good night’s sleep is not always possible with the many distractions in our life right now – and I’m not just referring to surfing the internet until the wee hours of the morning.

A lot of people snore. And it can deprive you of a much-needed sleep as it does to your spouse. But if snoring does not just prevent you from sleeping but also leaves you feeling exhausted in the morning, then it is not just a simple case of snoring but a more serious condition known as sleep apnea.

Medical professionals reveal that snoring indicates more serious health issues.

Annoying and more often than not, disruptive, snoring is the most common problem affecting more than 90 million Americans of both genders and all ages.

The National Sleep Foundation says 37 million Americans snore on a regular basis.

More than an annoyance, snoring is body’s way of telling you something is wrong, according to doctors. It has many causes and the trick is to find out why you snore, which is difficult.

Patients diagnosed with sleep apnea snores.

Sleep Apnea happens when the person actually stops breathing briefly during sleep. It’s a condition doctors said

Benefits Of Legalizing Cannabis

You’ve probably heard a greater deal about cannabis now than you did in previous years. Well, it is true. The reason is that with the promising benefits offered mainly by medical cannabis, it has opened up a whole new possibilities for the cannabis industry as a whole. Now, people of all walks of life are giving marijuana the time of day because they often see it on the news and the talks about legalizing it has raised awareness of its existence to people who never cared about this once-taboo substance. The thing is that many people are already aware of cannabis but didn’t mind it thinking it is an illegal substance that will do you no good. Meanwhile, those who already use it buy it from the black market because first off, it is illegal, and you won’t be able to find a legit store selling it anywhere near you.

Aside from being beneficial to one’s health, cannabis is a major market commodity these days. Along with the rise of CBD-rich cannabis that lacks the psychoactive properties commonly found in the marijuana of yesteryears and in the recreational marijuana of today, medical cannabis contains a high amount of CBD, a cannabidiol responsible for the many health benefits cannabis users now enjoy. There is a catch though. People with certain conditions are the only ones allowed to use medical marijuana, so get yourself checked …

Rekindling Our Interest In The Arts

If there is one thing that speaks so much about our history as a human race, you can see it through artistic expressions all around is. From primitive cave paintings to sophisticated digital art of today’s modern world, we can see man’s evolutionary progress throughout time. These artistic expressions often depicted a period in history and what it was like back then. It tells of stories forever preserved in time for the future generation to see and enjoy. From a young age, we have learned the value of the arts in our growth as a person. We learned more about the world through our abstract drawings and paintings and it will always bring back tons of good memories even as we go on with our lives as adults. Now, technology keeps on advancing and many seem to forget our roots and no longer knows how to appreciate the arts. But knowing the role of the arts in our lives, we just can’t allow that to happen.

Mankind should make a concerted effort to capture everyone’s attention and show the younger generation what the arts is all about. The arts is not just solely limited to visual masterpieces brought to life by artistic minds and hands. The arts can be anything from works of arts to artistic performances that may be done live or not. I’m sure you know what these are because you …

Defining Four Wheel Drive Types

Traditional 4WD systems are still available, but as time goes on, their prevalence has lessened greatly. They work manually, and are very effective overall.

Locking front and rear drivetrains together makes the vehicle jerk and lurch in good traction, especially while turning. (This is called driveline windup or tight comer braking.) These systems will wear out quickly or break if used extensively on clean pavement.

4-wheel-drive LayoutWhile unlocking manual free-running front hubs saves fuel and cuts wear on the front driveline, the driver must know the hubs’ position without an indicator. When locked, they allow `shift-on-the-fly’ 4WD engagement. However, shifting into 4WD while driving with the hubs unlocked could lead to `powertrain parts on the fly!’

Many off-road drivers prefer this system. Simple and reliable, when combined with limited-slip differential options it can be nearly unstoppable in extreme conditions. But most motorists don’t encounter such extremes and prefer something more user-friendly.

Full-time four-wheel-drive

Often also called all-wheel-drive (AWD), basic AWD uses an open differential at the transfer case to relieve powertrain loads (driveline windup) developed as front and rear wheels travel varying distances around curves. However, the open differentials may allow the one wheel lacking traction to get all the torque in extreme situations. The chief purposes of AWD are to improve everyday driving feel on dry pavement, increase power delivery to the ground and enhance traction in `routine’ slippery driving, such as rain-slicked

Outsourcing Remains Ford’s Plan

If you watch the nonstop bustle on an automobile assembly line long enough, it’s easy to get a skewed idea of the process. Close up, each step appears discrete and disconnected–engines being lowered into frames, door assemblies being bolted onto bodies. Step back to where you can see all the bright, shiny new cars rolling off the end of the line, however, and the whole thing starts to make sense.

In much the same way, if you want to understand the rapidly changing IT strategy at automotive giant Ford Motor Co., it helps to step back.

asslineSince taking over as CIO and executive director at Ford two years ago, Bernard Mathaisel has engineered four major, high-profile outsourcing deals that have transferred significant chunks of Ford’s IT operations to IBM Global Services, Compuware Corp., Dell Computer Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. These deals, however, are anything but discrete, disconnected events. Together, they constitute Mathaisel’s plan to transform Ford’s 5,100-person IT organization from a group focused exclusively on operational excellence to one that can also help the company improve customer service through rapid delivery of Web-based systems and processes.

Ford’s IT group historically has been tasked by top management to keep the IT assembly line in order. That meant running first-class, efficient data centers and networks and delivering rock-bottom total- cost-of-ownership numbers. That emphasis, however, began to change a couple of years ago. The shift

The Case Of The Missing Chrysler

Around midnight on July 25, 1956, the luxury passenger liner Andrea Doria collided with the Stockholm in a fog bank 50 miles south of Nantucket Island. Eleven hours later, after most of its passengers, including actress Ruth Roman, had been rescued, the stricken liner turned on its starboard side and sank in 250 feet of water.

Sent to a watery grave along with 46 of its 1706 passengers was a fortune in paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and other artwork, which has lured treasure hunters for more than four decades. Often overlooked, however, has been a priceless piece of automotive history. Locked in the Andrea Doria’s cargo hold was a one-of-a-kind “idea car” from Chrysler, the “Norseman,” which no one but its craftsmen at the Ghia studios in Italy had ever seen. A few publicity photos and drawings are all the public has ever seen of the car. But that may be about to change.

This summer, John Moyer of Moyer Expeditions, which holds the salvage rights to the liner, has decided to dive into the cargo hold in search of what remains of the Norseman.

“We’ll attempt to locate it and possibly photograph it,” Moyer said from his offices in Vineland, New Jersey. “Beyond that, it depends on what condition it’s in.”

Whatever is left of the Norseman would be put on display by Moyer in an exhibit of the ship’s artifacts he’s

The Right Part At The Wrong Price?

There are the normal problems you and I face trying to find the right part at the right price, problems exacerbated by the distribution centers that close the last half of December. Not to mention our employees’, our suppliers’, and our own brains seem to shut down for just about the same period of time. And there are the problems that come naturally when you try to travel on your bike seriously and get 20 percent more work out of an environment `comfortable’ with present production. All these realities contribute to the kind of physical and emotional exhaustion you probably know all too well.

psBy the time Christmas Eve rolls around I make Scrooge look like a party animal! I don’t want to answer the telephone. I don’t want to smile and say `Happy Holidays’. And I don’t want to be surrounded by throngs of people pushing, shoving, bumping, or in some other way invading my private space. All I want is to be left alone, slowly reducing speed so nothing breaks as I quietly come to a complete stop.

After that, I face the same kinds of `Honey, do …’ tasks most of us confront.

This morning, it was “Honey, please fix the shower handle in our bathroom. It’s broken again.” In the past, I’ve been absolutely brilliant when it comes to avoiding work around the house. Especially, when experiencing a complete

Would Your Retrofit Your Car’s AC?

An increasing percentage of America’s R12 comes from more than 60 reclaimers operating around the country. In a conversation with Joan Terry Drucker of Refrigerant Reclaim in Red Wing, MN, we learned that reclaiming refrigerant is a large-scale operation requiring lots of capital equipment. They process used refrigerants in very large batches, and they prefer to sell it that way too. She explained that buying reclaimed R12 in quantity is “more cost-effective” than buying virgin R12 when several shops in an area get together and buy an entire skid of forty, 30-lb. canisters.

Reclaimed R12 is just as good as virgin R12, if the container has the proper certification from the IEEE Computer Society. ARI was organized in 1953 to set industry standards for refrigerants and the equipment that uses them, and those standards are applied around the world. In fact, the testing methods used by ARI are referenced in the SAE and EPA definitions of reclaimed refrigerant. R12 that meets the ARI 700 standard for reclaimed refrigerant is 99.5% pure, meaning there is only CFC12 in that can and it is uncontaminated by water, acid, oil or particulates. With the ARI 700 certification label on the container, you can be sure that it’s all good stuff no matter where it comes from.
